Description

*My entry to ~WolfBane88's contest to color in her character Vincent. We were given this line art as a reference and to color if we wanted but I went the extra step and drew my own.*

Let's get you all in on a secret. I've NEVER drawn a wolf before. The only fur I ever dabbled in was for fuzzy dragons and let me tell you how much that drove me crazy. It isn't that I don't like wolves, I love them and I've wanted to draw them forever. I just never really sat down and tried.

This was the entry doomed to never be completed. ~WolfBane88 was nice enough to give me a week's extension.

Using a ref I had readily available I used this ([link]) photo of my dog Riddick for anatomy and pose. Once I had it all done and half colored in the laptop crashed and I lost everything! I scrambled all weekend to rush and redraw what I had before the deadline but there was no way I'd be happy with a half assed cell shaded picture.

Instead I took my outline (now that I had a bit of extra time) and totally started over. The anatomy was roughly sketched and inked with a fine tip Sharpie. I finally broke out my Farber Castelle pencils which I haven't used in over a year and set to work.

I found a few pictures of real wolves with a mixture of brown and grey fur. With that idea in mind I got to work. Vincent's legs came out a lot redder then intended and the transition from brown to grey on the middle of his chest turned out gold oddly enough but over all I'm very happy with the way things came out.

The piece itself had to be scanned in two parts and stitched back together using an HP photo program. I also used GIMP just to edit out the smudges I made from my hand while drawing. Over all this is still a 90% traditional piece.

I'm hoping now not to get so rusty with colored pencils again and probably need to buy something that isn't so soft since the marks are pretty obvious and the color isn't as solid as I had hoped. I could have done a lot of smudging and blending in GIMP but that would have totally defeated the purpose of actually coloring by hand.

If anyone has suggestions on how to improve my colored pencil skills I'm totally up for it!

From my fiance's suggestion there's a watermark since he's now as pissed off as I am about art theft and there's no way he or I want something I worked so hard on getting stolen.
